ANDREW BROAD – NATIONAL CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS 2018 This year the Club has celebrated the success of Andrew Broad who in August won the National Champion of Champions at Leamington. Andrew is the first member of our Club to win a National title and it is a great honour for the Club. The Club arranged a Surprise Celebration for Andrew in September where Club members were joined by Andrew’s family, Bowls Cornwall Officers, bowlers who were at Leamington giving their support during the Championship, the Chairman of St. Stephen in Brannel Parish Council and the Chairman of the Recreation Ground Committee. An excellent buffet was prepared by Andrew’s brother James with assistance from family members and a great evening was had by all who attended. In addition to his National title Andrew Broad was the Group Champion of Champions Winner and Runner Up in the County. Andrew was also awarded his Middleton Cup flash. OTHER CLUB SUCCESSES 2018 The Club has had a successful season and has recruited a number of new players this year. The Club’s A Team was third in Division 1 for the fourth successive year and won the Salver given in memory of Reg Middleton by Newquay Trenance Bowling Club. The B Team was fifth in Division 2 and the C Team was fourth in Division 3. The Club ran two very successful Tournaments during the year. The one day Open Triples Tournament in July had 24 teams taking part. The winners were Alan Warnes and Patrick Lawrence of St. Stephen with Mike Heard of Stenalees and the runners up were Keith Blake, Jim and Andrew Broad of St. Stephen. The St. Stephen 47 th Open Tournament in September was run on the same basis as last year with the Mixed Pairs and the Mixed Triples competitions were played on a round robin basis and the Open Singles was a straight knock-out. The winners of the Mixed Pairs were Gill Moore of Probus and Melville Julian of St. Stephen who beat Barbara Chanter and Brian Harris of Dunheved. In third place were Meta Johnson and Rod Danyluk of Probus who beat Judith and Peter Prynne of Dunheved. The winners of the Mixed Triples were Joyce Barrett of Grampound, Phil King of St. Austell and Michael Heard of Stenalees who beat Clifford Mitchell of Stenalees, Keith Stephens of St. Austell and Phyl McGlynn of Lostwithiel. The Open Singles was won by Tom Howell who beat Patrick Lawrence, both from St. Stephen.
